Endemic Species

Alphonsea gaudichaudiana

The Alphonsea gaudichaudiana is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 12 meters high. The tree has smooth bark and simple, alternate leaves. The berry-like fruits are cylindrical, yellow, and smooth and contain three to five seeds. The flowers are arranged in few-flowered clusters. The Alphonsea gaudichaudiana is commonly distributed in the evergreen forests of Laos and Vietnam. In Vietnam, the species can be found up to 1900 meters altitude.

Canarium tonkinensis Engl.

The Canarium tonkinensis is a large deciduous tree that can grow up to 18 meters high. The tree has scaly bark, compound alternate leaves, opposite leaflets, and aromatic white resinous sap. The fruits are drupes, turn dull yellow when mature and have only a single seed. The flowers are small and greenish white. The Canarium tonkinensis is found around 500 meters altitude in degraded forests of Laos and Vietnam.

Millettia boniana Gagnep.

Mil BonThe Millettia boniana is a small evergreen tree that can grow to about five meters high and ten centimeters in diameter. The tree has flaky bark, compound alternate leaves, and opposite leaflets. The fruits are flat pods that are about ten centimeters in length, thick walled, and brown on the outer surface. The stem of the tree have red sap and the flowers are small and white. The Millettia boniana is found between 500 and 600 meters altitude in depleted forests, evergreen forests, or open degraded forests of Laos and Vietnam.

Ormosia laosensis C. Niyomdham

Orm LaoThe Ormosia laosensis is a deciduous or evergreen tree that can grow up to eight meters high and 15 centimeters in diameter. The tree has scaly flaky bark, compound alternate leaves, and opposite leaflets. The fruit is a thick cylindrical pod that is about three centimeters in length, red on the outer surface before turning blackish brown, and contains one or two scarlet red seeds. The tree has reddish brown sap, and the flowers are white with dark brown hairy calyx. The Ormosia laosensis is found from 200 meters to 600 meters altitude in the open degraded forests or evergreen forests of Laos and Vietnam.

Sindora laotica Gagnep.

Sin LaoThe Sindora laotica is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 45 meters high and one meter in diameter. The tree has smooth bark, compound alternate leaves, and opposite leaflets that are 2-3 pairs. The fruits are dark brown woody pods that are about three to four centimeters in length and have numerous stout spines with one to three black glossy seeds. The fruits may have dry white resinous sap on the surface. The flowers bud ovoid with spines on the calyx. The Sindora laotica is found from 300 to 1000 meters altitude along the roads of evergreen or degraded forests of Laos and Vietnam.
